Many people believe a good password has to look strange, full of numbers and symbols, like a secret code. Why does length help so much? Computers break passwords by trying huge numbers of combinations, one after another, very quickly. Every extra character multiplies the number of combinations they have to try. So a password that is twice as long is not just twice as hard to guess; it is far, far harder.

One easy way to make a long password is a passphrase: several random words, like 'window cactus river spoon'. You can picture it, so it is easy to remember. The words must be truly random, though. A famous saying or a line from a song is a bad choice, because computers try those first.
